Bertinazzi (Nr Stanthorpe, Queensland) - Packing Beans
Tuesday 23rd February - Wednesday 17th March

It made me happy to finally get a job that wasn't just for one day! Woohoo! This job basically involved packing beans. Funnily enough. Because its in a shed and not out in the sunlight the hours really vary, our starts have been at 9am / 10am / 11am depending on the weather, because if it rains they can't pick the beans.

The beans come through on conveyor belts - there is four of them - one person on each of end belts, and two people each on the middle ones. Beans come through and we have to pick through them and sort them out. Parts of the actual plants accidently get mixed in and need to be pulled out, and some of the beans are attached to eachother and need to be pulled apart. Some of the beans also start going rotten and need to be taken out too. Its the easiest work ever, but because its so continuous it gets pretty hard. The good thing is that after a while you can just switch off and do it automatically, but music is a real necessity in this job - the first day I had no music and it just felt like the day lasted FOREVER. Music is good!

The hours really vary depending on how many beans there are. Our shortest shift was 3 hours and our longest was 8 hours. A normal shift is about 6 hours long and during that we'd get a 30 minute lunch break. The longest we'd normally work for at a time is about 3 1/2 hours, any longer than that and we'd get a quick break just to chill out - its surprising how much this work hurts your shoulders!
