Subiaco Farm (Walcha, NSW)

Subiaco Farm (Walcha, New South Wales) - weeding rows of Echinacea plants
Friday 30th January - Wednesday 4th February

Start time would vary, although generally between 6-8am. We'd get a really long lunch break, normally at least 2 hours, so we didn't have to work in the hot sun. Normally we finished around 6pm. Every now and then we'd also get a quick 5 minute break to go get a drink of water or something.

The work itself was weeding using hoes. We were working on a field the owners originally hadn't planned to use so it was really overgrown, a hell of a lot of weeds! The work itself was pretty variable in difficulty - some parts of the field had good soil and some bad, so it varied based on where you were on the line. The main issue I had at this farm was FLIES! They were absolutely terrible, a million of them around and they would constantly fly into your face. Not good when your mouth is open / you're sniffing due to a cold! I do not care to think back to how many flies I may or may not have swallowed or had flown up my nose during my time on this farm (and it wasn't very long either!)

Because the workers were living on the farm, a 'community' type of thing was encouraged. Music wasn't allowed while we were working and we were encouraged to do things together in the evenings rather than read or go on the laptops by ourselves.
